Join Ashley Hall’s Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning, Naa-Adei Kotey, in conversation with John Copenhaver, award-winning author of The Savage Kind and Hall of Mirrors. Coopenhaver’s thrilling mysteries follow two teenage girls in 1950s Washington, DC, as they solve crimes, uncover dangerous secrets, and navigate their lives in a time of intense societal pressure. This lively discussion will explore history, crime fiction, and challenging the rules of the past.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
JOHN COPENHAVER | John Copenhaver is an award-winning author whose latest novel, Hall of Mirrors, was selected as a New York Times Crime Novel of the Year. His debut, Dodging and Burning, won the 2019 Macavity Award for Best First Mystery, and The Savage Kind earned the 2021 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ Mystery. A lifelong educator, he mentors aspiring writers in the Low-Residency MFA program at the University of Nebraska and teaches creative writing and literature at Virginia Commonwealth University. He lives in Richmond, Virginia, with his husband, artist Jeffery Paul Herrity. www.johncopenhaver.com

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
HARLAN GREENE | A native of Charleston, Harlan Greene is emeritus Scholar-in-Residence at the College of Charleston’s Addlestone Library. A winner of the Lambda Literary Award and a 2024 inductee into the SC Academy of Authors, he is the author of numerous essays, articles, novels and works of history and biography, many focusing on various aspects of Charleston and the Lowcountry.

Since its creation in 2005, the Ashley Hall’s Writers Series has hosted dozens of award-winning authors on the school’s historic campus located in downtown Charleston. Events are generally free and open to the public. Recent featured guests have included acclaimed art critic for The New Republic Jed Perl, non-fiction writer and poet Lisa Wells, and award-winning food writer Rossi Anastopoulo ’13.
